The Region
The Monferrato region stretches from the Ligurian Apennines, across the
Casale area to the Po Valley. The region is full of medieval castles, Romanesque,
Gothic, and Renaissance churches, and Baroque monuments. The centre of the
Monferrato region is Asti, situated at the edge of the hills leading off
to Turin. The steep valleys of Belbo, Bormida, Lerro and Orba slope down
to the plains of Alessandria. It is situated close to the Piedmontese Alps,
and within easy reach of many Italian, French and Swiss ski resorts. Monferrato
is only 30 miles from the Italian Riviera.
